Type the device’s name or network address and press “Add”. See below for some examples. You will see the device appear in the middle of the map and InterMapper will begin probing for its interfaces to adjacent networks. Switch to “Edit mode” to be able to move items around to your taste.
When you specify the AUTOMATIC protocol, InterMapper first sends a few probes using SNMP. If these probes fail to elicit a response, it falls back on an echo test appropriate for the type of device. For IP, this means ICMP Echoes -- for AppleTalk, the AppleTalk Echo protocol.
If the host name has the form “node xx”, InterMapper adds the corresponding NED and polls it using the NED statistics protocol, ignoring the state of the Protocol pop-up. The NED Statistics Protocol is a proprietary network management protocol used for routers on Dartmouth's AppleTalk network.
Note: To add a device polled with RTMP, you must explicitly choose “RTMP” in the pop-up menu.
